What is 3-D Secure?

3-D Secure provides issuers and merchants a way to distinguish good transactions from bad transactions. It was created to prevent fraud and keep digital transactions and their authentication fast and secure for both merchants and consumers. This is something Divvy makes available for merchants who wish to use 3-D Secure to authorize transactions.

3D Secure is only available for companies using Divvy’s Visa® Business cards. Not all customers are eligible for Divvy Visa® Business cards at this time, but if you’d like to know if you qualify, please visit getdivvy.com/credit/visa/ to join the waitlist and our team will be in touch!

How does 3-D Secure work?

In some instances, you may be prompted to verify your identity through the Divvy mobile app or an email. (You can use whichever option is more convenient for you. Here’s what the flow looks like.

On the merchant website, you’ll see a pop-up window that looks something like this:

Payment Confirmation

You will see a timer on the pop-up window that shows how long you have to open either the Divvy mobile or web app to approve or decline your transaction. If you don’t confirm before the timer expires your transaction will automatically decline.

Next, open your Divvy app to verify your payment.

To verify the transaction, tap the Yes, It’s Me button [1].

If you did not make the transaction, tap the No, It’s Not Me button [2]. You’ll then have the option to freeze your card.

If you don’t use the mobile app you can still verify through email. Just check your inbox for a message from Divvy. It will look something like this:

To confirm that you recognize the payment, click the Verify Payment button.

Once you have confirmed the purchase, return to the merchant page and continue your checkout process.

Transactions that have been confirmed through 3-D Secure include a 3-D Secure Verified label on the Transactions Details page.

  • I confirmed my payment but the transaction was still declined
    After 3-D Secure authentication, the transaction still must go through the standard authorization flow. Check to ensure you have sufficient funds on the card and the card isn't frozen.

  • I make transactions regularly at this particular merchant, but each time I'm still prompted for 3-D Secure. Is there any way to not have to do this every time?
    The prompt for 3-D Secure originates at the merchant level. We strive to make the experience as smooth as possible, please feel free to share any feedback with the Divvy team by contacting your Customer Success Manager or our support team.

  • Do 3-D Secure transactions qualify to be disputed?
    3-D secure transactions cannot be charged back to the merchant for fraud since they represent transactions that have been verified by the cardholder. As a cardholder, you may be responsible for these charges.

    3-D secure transactions can still be disputed for discrepancies such as being overcharged or receiving damaged goods. Learn how to dispute a transaction.

  • What if I don’t have the Divvy mobile app?

    If you don’t use the mobile app, no need to worry. You will also receive an email immediately and can confirm the purchase in Divvy on your web browser.

  • Can transactions approved through 3-D Secure be disputed for fraud?

    No. Because 3-D Secure transactions are manually approved by the cardholder, these transactions cannot be disputed for fraud. The option to dispute for fraud will not be available for all 3-D Secure transactions.
